Introduction
Many people equate maturity with age, years in church, or knowledge of the Bible. However, spiritual maturity is measured by our relationship with Christ, our response to His Word, and our willingness to keep growing.
In Philippians 3, Paul had already accomplished much. He had an impressive religious background, had encountered Christ, planted churches, and endured suffering for the gospel. Yet he declared that he had not already attained perfection but continued to press on towards the heavenly prize.
He then says, "All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things." This means that genuine maturity is not believing you have arrived, but recognising that there is still more to know, more to become, and more of Christ to pursue.
1. Mature Faith Never Stops Growing
Philippians 3:12-14
Paul admitted that he had not reached perfection. Instead, he forgot what was behind and strained towards what was ahead.
A mature believer never becomes comfortable spiritually. They are always seeking a deeper knowledge of God.
Signs of continuous growth include:
Hunger for God's Word.
A consistent prayer life.
A teachable spirit.
A desire to become more like Christ.
The opposite of maturity is spiritual complacency. The moment we believe we know enough, growth stops.
Application: Never allow yesterday's victories to become today's excuses for remaining stagnant.
2. Mature Faith Has the Mind of Christ
Paul says, "Who are mature should take such a view."
What was this view?
It was the attitude of pursuing Christ above every earthly achievement.
Earlier in Philippians 3, Paul counted everything he once valued as loss compared with knowing Christ.
A mature believer values:
Christ above comfort.
Holiness above popularity.
Obedience above convenience.
Eternal rewards above temporary pleasures.
Maturity changes our priorities.
3. Mature Faith Remains Teachable
Paul continues,
"If on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you."
This statement reveals humility.
Even mature believers do not know everything.
They remain open to correction through:
God's Word.
The Holy Spirit.
Godly leadership.
Wise counsel.
Pride says, "I already know."
Faith says, "Lord, continue to teach me."
The greatest danger to spiritual growth is an unteachable heart.
Proverbs 9:9
"Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still."
4. Mature Faith Walks in Unity
Paul was writing to believers with different backgrounds and experiences.
Instead of creating division, he encouraged unity while trusting God to reveal truth over time.
A mature Christian understands that not every disagreement requires conflict.
They choose:
Peace over arguments.
Love over criticism.
Patience over condemnation.
Unity over division.
This does not mean compromising truth. Rather, it means trusting God to bring clarity while maintaining love.
5. Mature Faith Trusts God's Guidance
Paul believed God Himself would reveal truth to sincere believers.
This reminds us that spiritual growth is ultimately God's work.
The Holy Spirit:
Convicts.
Corrects.
Reveals truth.
Leads believers into maturity.
Our responsibility is to remain available and obedient.
God's responsibility is to complete His work within us.
Characteristics of Someone with Mature Faith
A believer with mature faith:
Pursues Christ daily.
Does not boast about spiritual achievements.
Remains humble and teachable.
Loves unity in the body of Christ.
Accepts correction.

May we be believers who never stop pursuing Christ until we see Him face to face.
