Introduction
One of the greatest invitations in the Bible is God's call for humanity to draw near to Him. God has never hidden Himself from those who sincerely seek Him. While sin creates distance between us and God, His grace continually calls us back into fellowship.
James was writing to believers who had become distracted by worldly desires, pride and selfish ambitions. He reminds them that the answer to spiritual dryness is not more activity but greater intimacy with God. The promise is clear: when we come close to God, He comes close to us.
God longs for a relationship, not merely religious observance.
1. God Invites Us Into His Presence
The command, "Come near to God," is an open invitation. God is not pushing us away. He is calling us into deeper fellowship.
Throughout Scripture, God has always desired to dwell with His people.
Adam and Eve enjoyed God's presence before sin entered the world.
Moses spoke with God face to face.
David longed continually for God's presence.
Through Jesus Christ, the veil was torn, giving every believer direct access to God.
No matter how far you may have drifted, God still invites you back.
Hebrews 10:22
"Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings."
2. Coming Close Requires Repentance
James immediately says,
"Wash your hands... purify your hearts."
Hands represent our actions.
Heart represents our motives.
God desires both outward holiness and inward purity.
True repentance means:
Turning away from sinful habits.
Confessing our sins.
Allowing God to change our hearts.
Living a life that honours Him.
God is not looking for perfection before you come. He asks for a willing heart that desires transformation.
Psalm 24:3-4
"Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?... The one who has clean hands and a pure heart."
3. Remove Double-Mindedness
James addresses those who are double-minded.
A double-minded person wants God while still holding tightly to the world. Such a person constantly struggles because their loyalty is divided.
Jesus said,
Matthew 6:24
"No one can serve two masters."
Drawing close to God requires wholehearted commitment.
Ask yourself:
Is God truly first in my life?
What competes with my relationship with Him?
Am I serving God only when it is convenient?
God deserves complete devotion.
4. Drawing Near Requires Intentional Pursuit
No relationship grows without time and commitment.
We come close to God through:
Daily prayer.
Studying His Word.
Worship.
Obedience.
Fellowship with other believers.
Quiet moments of listening to Him.
The more time we spend with God, the more we begin to reflect His character.
Jeremiah 29:13 says,
"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
5. The Blessings of Drawing Close to God
When we draw near to God, several things happen.
a. We receive peace.
God's presence calms every troubled heart.
b. We receive direction.
God speaks clearly to those who seek Him.
c. We gain strength.
His presence renews those who are weary.
d. We experience transformation.
The closer we walk with God, the more we become like Christ.
e. We enjoy His protection.
Those who remain close to God live under His care and guidance.
Psalm 73:28 says,
"But as for me, it is good to be near God."

Conclusion
God is waiting for you with open arms. The distance between God and man is never because God has moved away. More often, it is we who have drifted. Yet His invitation remains the same:
"Come near to God and He will come near to you."
Whether you have been walking with God for many years or have wandered away, today is an opportunity to return to Him. The closer you are to God, the stronger your faith becomes, the clearer His voice is, and the greater your joy.
Choose today to pursue His presence above everything else.
