Introduction
Water is essential for survival. Without it, every living thing eventually dies. Throughout Scripture, God uses water as a symbol of life, cleansing, refreshment and the sustaining power of His presence. David declares in Psalm 36:9 that God Himself is "the fountain of life." He is not merely the giver of life. He is its very source.
A fountain is different from a reservoir. A reservoir can become empty, but a fountain continues to flow because it is connected to an endless source. Likewise, everyone who is connected to God has access to an inexhaustible supply of life, strength, wisdom and grace.
Today's world is filled with broken cisterns that promise satisfaction but leave people empty. Only God remains the true Fountain of Life.
1. God Is the Source of All Life
Every living thing owes its existence to God.
Genesis 2:7 tells us that God breathed into man the breath of life, and man became a living soul. Our physical life, spiritual life and eternal life all begin with Him.
Many people depend on their education, wealth, influence or abilities for security. While these are blessings, they cannot sustain life apart from God.
James 1:17 reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from above.
When we acknowledge God as the source of our lives, we stop trusting ourselves and begin trusting Him completely.
Lesson: Never disconnect yourself from the One who gives life.
2. Jesus Christ Is the Fountain of Eternal Life
Jesus fulfilled David's declaration.
He said in John 10:10:
"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
Again, in John 4, Jesus offered the Samaritan woman living water that would become "a well of water springing up into everlasting life."
Many people seek fulfilment in pleasure, success and possessions, yet remain spiritually thirsty.
Only Jesus can satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart.
Without Christ there may be existence, but there is no true life.
Lesson: Eternal life is found only in Jesus Christ.
3. The Fountain of Life Never Runs Dry
Human resources are limited.
Money finishes.
Strength fades.
Friends disappoint.
Health can fail.
But God's supply never ends.
Isaiah 40:31 declares that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.
God's mercy is new every morning.
His grace is sufficient.
His love never fails.
Those who continually seek Him will continually be refreshed.
Like a tree planted beside rivers of water, believers who remain close to God continue to flourish even during difficult seasons.
Lesson: Stay connected to God's presence if you want continual renewal.
4. The Fountain Cleanses and Restores
Flowing water washes away impurity.
Likewise, God's grace cleanses the sinner.
1 John 1:7 says that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
No matter how stained a life may be, God is able to forgive, restore and make it new.
Many people carry guilt from their past, but God's fountain still flows with mercy.
There is forgiveness for the repentant and restoration for the broken.
Lesson: No one is beyond God's power to cleanse.
5. Those Who Drink from God's Fountain Become Channels of Life
God never intended His blessings to stop with us.
Jesus declared in John 7:38:
"He that believeth on me... out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
Believers are called to refresh others through love, encouragement, prayer, generosity and the preaching of the Gospel.
A Christian connected to the Fountain of Life becomes a blessing wherever they go.
Your family, workplace, church and community should experience God's life flowing through you.
Lesson: Don't only receive God's life. Share it.
6. God's Light Gives Direction for Life
Psalm 36:9 continues:
"In thy light shall we see light."
Without God's light, people stumble in darkness.
His Word reveals truth.
His Spirit provides guidance.
His wisdom helps us distinguish right from wrong.
Psalm 119:105 says:
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
Those who walk in God's light avoid many unnecessary mistakes and enjoy the peace that comes from following His will.
Lesson: Stay in God's light if you desire clear direction.
Conclusion
The world offers many wells, but they eventually run dry.
God alone is the everlasting Fountain of Life.
He gives life to the weary, hope to the hopeless, forgiveness to the sinner, strength to the weak and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
The invitation still stands today.
Come to the Fountain.
Drink deeply.
Remain connected to Him.
Allow His life to flow through you so that others may also find true life.
When God is your Fountain, you will never truly thirst again.
