Introduction
Every human being has plans, ambitions, dreams and expectations. We carefully map out our future, make decisions, and set goals. While planning is good and encouraged, today's Scripture reminds us that there is one counsel that can never fail: the counsel of the Lord.
People may have countless ideas, governments may create policies, experts may offer advice, and even the enemy may devise evil plans, but only what God has determined will stand forever. The wisest decision anyone can make is to seek, trust and obey God's counsel.
What Is the Counsel of the Lord?
The counsel of the Lord is God's will, purpose, wisdom and divine direction concerning every situation. It is His perfect plan that is based on His infinite knowledge and unfailing love.
Unlike human counsel, which can be influenced by emotions, limited knowledge or selfish motives, God's counsel is perfect, righteous and eternal.
Isaiah 46:10
"My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure."
God never revises His plans because He never makes mistakes.
Characteristics of the Counsel of the Lord
1. The counsel of the Lord is unchangeable
God's plans cannot be overturned by human effort or satanic opposition.
Psalm 33:11 says:
"The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations."
What God has spoken remains true regardless of changing circumstances.
2. The counsel of the Lord is perfect
Human wisdom is limited, but God's wisdom is flawless.
Romans 11:33 declares:
"O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!"
God sees the beginning and the end simultaneously. He knows what is best even when we do not understand His ways.
3. The counsel of the Lord brings peace
Many people live in anxiety because they rely on their own understanding. Those who follow God's direction enjoy confidence and peace.
Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on Him.
4. The counsel of the Lord leads to victory
Joshua succeeded because he obeyed God's instructions.
When Israel marched around Jericho according to God's unusual command, the walls collapsed because God's counsel always produces victory.
Why Do People Reject God's Counsel?
1. Pride
Some people believe they know better than God. Pride prevents people from seeking divine direction.
2. Worldly wisdom
Society often promotes ideas that contradict God's Word. Many choose popular opinion instead of biblical truth.
3. Impatience
Saul lost his kingdom because he could not wait for God's appointed time (1 Samuel 13).
Many leave God's plan because they want immediate results.
4. Sin
A sinful lifestyle hardens the heart against God's instruction.
Benefits of Following the Counsel of the Lord
1. Divine direction
God leads His children in the right path.
Psalm 32:8 says:
"I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go."
2. Protection
God's guidance keeps us away from unnecessary dangers and destructive decisions.
3. Fruitfulness
When we walk according to God's purpose, our labour becomes fruitful.
4. Fulfilled destiny
Every great man and woman in Scripture fulfilled God's purpose because they followed His counsel.
Abraham became the father of many nations because he obeyed God's call.
Joseph became a ruler because he trusted God's plan through difficult seasons.
Mary became the mother of Jesus because she submitted to God's will.
How Can We Know the Counsel of the Lord?
1. Through His Word
The Bible is God's revealed counsel for our lives.
Psalm 119:105 says:
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
2. Through prayer
God reveals His will to those who sincerely seek Him.
3. Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth (John 16:13).
4. Through godly counsel
God often speaks through spiritually mature believers whose lives align with His Word.
Conclusion
Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that people will always make plans, but only God's counsel will ultimately prevail. The safest place in life is not where everything seems easy, but where God's will is being fulfilled.
Do not build your future merely on your intelligence, experience or human advice. Build your life upon the unshakable counsel of God. When His counsel directs your steps, no opposition can stop His purpose for your life.
Choose today to trust His wisdom above your own, and you will discover that God's plan is always better than your own.
