Introduction
Every day, we receive advice from different sources. Family members, friends, social media, books, and even our own feelings all compete for our attention. While good counsel has its place, there is one counsel that never fails, never misleads, and never changes: the advice of the Lord.
Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that although human beings make many plans, God's counsel is the one that ultimately stands. The safest place for every believer is to seek, trust, and obey God's advice.
1. Human Advice is Limited, but God's Advice is Perfect
People advise based on what they know, but their knowledge is limited. God, however, knows the beginning from the end.
Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours.
Many people have suffered because they relied only on human wisdom. Others have succeeded because they chose to obey God's direction, even when it did not make sense to others.
Lesson: Never make an important decision without first seeking God's counsel.
2. The Lord's Advice is Rooted in His Purpose
Proverbs 19:21 does not say that our plans are always wrong. It simply says that God's purpose will prevail.
God sees the bigger picture. Sometimes He says:
Wait.
Go.
Stop.
Be patient.
Forgive.
Let go.
His advice is always connected to His eternal purpose for our lives.
Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you..."
God's advice is never intended to harm us but to lead us into His perfect will.
3. Obedience to God's Advice Brings Blessings
Throughout Scripture, blessings followed those who obeyed God's instruction.
Noah
God advised him to build an ark. It sounded foolish, but obedience saved his family.
Abraham
God told him to leave his country. He obeyed and became the father of many nations.
Peter
Jesus advised him to cast the net again after a fruitless night. Peter obeyed and experienced a miraculous catch.
God's advice may challenge our reasoning, but it always produces good results.
4. Ignoring God's Advice Leads to Regret
The Bible also records many who ignored God's counsel.
Saul ignored God's instruction and lost the kingdom.
Samson ignored repeated warnings and lost his strength.
Judas ignored Christ's teachings and destroyed himself.
Many regrets in life begin when people replace God's voice with their own desires.
5. How Can We Receive the Lord's Advice?
Through His Word
The Bible is God's written counsel.
Psalm 119:105
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
Through Prayer
Prayer is not only talking to God but also listening to Him.
Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth.
John 16:13
Through Godly Counsel
God sometimes speaks through mature believers whose lives reflect His Word.
However, every counsel must agree with Scripture.
6. Why Should We Trust God's Advice?
He knows tomorrow.
He cannot lie.
He loves us.
He has our best interests at heart.
His counsel never fails.
Human advice may expire, but God's counsel stands forever.
Isaiah 40:8
"The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever."
Practical Applications
Seek God's direction before making major decisions.
Compare every advice you receive with the Word of God.
Don't follow the crowd if it contradicts God's instruction.
Develop a habit of listening to God daily.
Obey promptly when God speaks.
Conclusion
Many voices compete for our attention, but only one voice guarantees safety and success. Our plans may seem wise, but God's counsel is wiser. His advice may not always be easy to follow, but it always leads to life.
Choose to trust God's wisdom above your own understanding, because the advice of the Lord never fails.
