Introduction

Prayer is one of the greatest privileges God has given to His children. Through prayer, we communicate with God, seek His direction, bring our needs before Him, confess our sins, intercede for others and enjoy fellowship with our Father.

Yet, in Matthew 6:6, Jesus draws our attention to an important aspect of prayer: private prayer.

Jesus says, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”

Jesus was not saying that public prayer is wrong. The Bible clearly teaches us to pray together. Jesus Himself prayed publicly, and the early church gathered regularly for prayer.

Rather, Jesus was addressing the motive behind prayer. Some people prayed to be seen and praised by others. Their prayer had become a performance rather than an expression of their relationship with God.

Jesus calls us back to the secret place.

There is a place for praying with others, but there must also be a place where you and God are alone.

1. PRIVATE PRAYER DEVELOPS OUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Jesus says:

“Pray to your Father.”

Prayer is not merely a religious duty. It is communication between a child and his Father.

A healthy relationship requires communication. If you love someone, you desire to spend time with that person. In the same way, a person who genuinely desires God will want to spend time with Him privately.

Private prayer reveals the reality of our relationship with God.

It is easy to pray when everyone around us is praying. It is easy to participate in a public prayer meeting. But what happens when nobody is watching?

Do you still pray?

Do you still seek God?

Do you still desire His presence?

Private prayer answers these questions.

Your public prayer may show people that you know how to pray, but your private prayer reveals whether you actually know God.

The secret place is where intimacy with God grows.

2. PRIVATE PRAYER REQUIRES US TO CLOSE THE DOOR

Jesus said:

“Go into your room, close the door.”

The closed door represents separation from distractions.

We live in a world filled with noise. Phones, social media, conversations, work, responsibilities and entertainment can constantly compete for our attention.

Sometimes we are physically before God, but our minds are somewhere else.

Jesus therefore says, “Close the door.”

Find a place where you can deliberately withdraw from distractions and give God your attention.

You may not have a special prayer room. You may live in a busy home. You may have children, work and many responsibilities. But you can still create moments of solitude with God.

Jesus Himself understood the importance of withdrawing to pray:

“Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”

Luke 5:16

If Jesus deliberately withdrew to pray, we should also recognise the importance of having quiet moments with God.

Sometimes you need to close the physical door so that you can open your heart to God.

3. PRIVATE PRAYER PURIFIES OUR MOTIVES

One of the major issues Jesus addressed in Matthew 6 was the desire to be seen by others.

Some people were not primarily interested in God. They were interested in people's admiration.

They wanted people to notice how religious they were.

But prayer is not a performance.

Prayer is not about impressing people. It is about connecting with God.

When you pray privately, there is nobody to impress.

You do not need impressive vocabulary.

You do not need a microphone.

You do not need an audience.

You can simply come before your Father.

You can say:

“Lord, I am tired.”

“Lord, I am afraid.”

“Lord, I need Your help.”

“Lord, forgive me.”

“Lord, I do not understand what is happening.”

“Lord, I need You.”

That is genuine prayer.

Private prayer helps us move from performing before people to relating with God.

4. PRIVATE PRAYER GIVES US A PLACE TO POUR OUT OUR HEARTS

There are things you may not feel comfortable saying to another person, but you can tell God.

The secret place is where you can be completely honest with your Father.

Psalm 62:8 says:

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

God already knows what is in your heart, but He invites you to bring it to Him.

You can bring your fears.

You can bring your disappointments.

You can bring your questions.

You can bring your weaknesses.

You can bring your dreams.

You can bring your failures.

You can bring your burdens.

You can bring your gratitude.

You can even bring your tears.

God does not require you to pretend in His presence.

The secret place should become a place where your heart can rest in God.

Sometimes you may enter your room carrying a heavy burden, but after spending time with God, you leave with renewed strength.

The situation may not have changed yet, but you have changed because you have encountered God.

5. PRIVATE PRAYER STRENGTHENS US FOR PUBLIC BATTLES

Many public victories have a private history.

David's victory over Goliath did not begin on the battlefield. His confidence in God had already been developed while he was alone tending his father's sheep.

Before David stood before Goliath, he had experienced God helping him overcome a lion and a bear.

His public victory was connected to his private relationship with God.

The same principle applies to us.

The strength you need for tomorrow may be developed in today's secret place.

The wisdom you need for a difficult decision may come while praying privately.

The courage you need to face a difficult situation may be strengthened during your time alone with God.

Private prayer prepares us for public challenges.

Do not wait until the battle comes before you begin to pray.

Build your prayer life before the battle.

When your relationship with God is strong in private, you are better prepared to stand when life becomes difficult.

6. GOD SEES WHAT IS DONE IN SECRET

Jesus ends His instruction with a powerful promise:

“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

People may not see your private prayers, but God sees them.

People may not know how early you wake up to pray.

They may not know how many nights you have spent seeking God.

They may not know about the tears you have shed in His presence.

They may not know the people you have been interceding for.

But God knows.

Nothing sincerely done before God is wasted.

Hebrews 6:10 reminds us:

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him.”

The world often celebrates what is visible.

God also sees what is invisible.

People may celebrate the public result, but God sees the private process that produced it.

Therefore, do not become discouraged because nobody recognises your secret prayers.

God sees.

He sees the sacrifice.

He sees the tears.

He sees the consistency.

He sees the faith.

He sees the secret place.

And Jesus assures us that the Father who sees what is done in secret will reward us.

THE SECRET PLACE MUST BECOME A PRIORITY

Private prayer should not be something we do only when we are in trouble.

It should become part of our daily walk with God.

Jesus said, “When you pray.”

He expected His followers to pray.

Therefore, establish a consistent prayer life.

Find a suitable place.

Remove unnecessary distractions.

Open your Bible.

Worship God.

Give thanks.

Confess your sins.

Present your needs.

Intercede for others.

Seek God's direction.

And give Him time to speak through His Word.

Do not measure your prayer life only by how long you pray.

Focus on developing a genuine relationship with God.

Consistency is more important than occasional intensity.

CONCLUSION

Matthew 6:6 teaches us that prayer is fundamentally about relationship, not performance.

Jesus invites us into the secret place.

A place where there is no audience.

No applause.

No recognition.

Just you and your Father.

When nobody is watching, pray.

When nobody is listening, pray.

When you feel strong, pray.

When you feel weak, pray.

When you have answers, pray.

When you have questions, pray.

When life is going well, pray.

When life is difficult, pray.

Pray privately.

Because the secret place is where intimacy with God is developed, motives are purified, burdens are surrendered, spiritual strength is built and faith is renewed.

People may not see your private prayers, but your Father sees them.

And what God develops in you privately will eventually become evident in the way you live publicly.

Remember:

Public prayer may reveal your words, but private prayer reveals your heart.

Do not merely pray where people can hear you. Pray where God can transform you.

Reflection

Am I developing a genuine private relationship with God, or do I only pray when others are watching or when I need something?

When nobody is around, do I still desire to spend time with God? What distractions are preventing me from giving Him my undivided attention?

Matthew 6:6 reminds us that our Father sees what is done in secret. The question is not whether God sees us, but whether we are making time to meet Him there. What is the condition of my secret prayer life?

Brighter Life Ministry

Prayer

  1. Father, give me a consistent and disciplined private prayer life.

  2. Lord, remove every distraction that keeps me from spending quality time with You.

  3. Father, purify my motives so that I will seek You rather than human recognition.

  4. Lord, strengthen me in the secret place and prepare me for every challenge I will face.

Brighter Life Ministry

Today's Challenge

Find a quiet place each day where you can be alone with God. Close the door, put aside distractions and spend intentional time in prayer. Do not pray merely to be seen or admired by others. Come before God honestly, surrender your desires to Him and seek His will. Make private prayer a consistent part of your daily walk with God.
