Introduction
Jesus used the relationship between a vine and its branches to reveal a fundamental truth about our relationship with Him. A branch has no independent life. It cannot survive, grow or produce fruit apart from the vine.
Jesus said, โI am the vine, ye are the branches.โ
This means that Christ is not merely a helper in our Christian journey. He is our source. Everything we need for a fruitful spiritual life comes from our connection with Him.
The greatest danger for a believer is not always open rebellion against God. Sometimes it is trying to live a good Christian life while gradually becoming less dependent on Christ.
Jesus therefore gives us the answer:
Abide in Me.
1. CHRIST IS THE SOURCE OF OUR SPIRITUAL LIFE
Jesus begins with the most important declaration:
โI am the vine.โ
A vine supplies the branch with the nourishment necessary for life and fruitfulness. The branch does not create its own nourishment. It receives it from the vine.
In the same way, Christ is the source of our spiritual life.
Our strength comes from Him.
Our grace comes from Him.
Our wisdom comes from Him.
Our ability to endure comes from Him.
Our power to overcome temptation comes from Him.
Our capacity to love, forgive and serve comes from Him.
Sometimes we become too impressed with our own abilities. We may have education, experience, connections, money, talent and influence. But none of these can substitute for our dependence upon Christ.
A branch may have potential, but without the vine, that potential cannot become fruit.
You may possess great abilities, but your greatest need is still Jesus.
The Christian life does not begin and end with Christ. Christ must remain the source throughout the entire journey.
Never become so confident in what God has given you that you forget the God who gave it.
2. ABIDING IN CHRIST IS A DAILY RELATIONSHIP
Jesus says:
โHe that abideth in me, and I in himโฆโ
The word abide means to remain, continue, dwell or stay.
Jesus is not talking about occasionally visiting Him. He is talking about maintaining a continuous relationship with Him.
A branch cannot disconnect from the vine today and expect to remain healthy indefinitely because it was connected yesterday.
In the same way, yesterday's prayer cannot sustain today's spiritual battle.
Yesterday's Bible study cannot replace today's fellowship with God.
Yesterday's encounter with God cannot substitute for today's walk with Him.
Our relationship with Christ must be continually renewed.
This is why prayer, Scripture, worship, obedience and fellowship with God are so important.
Abiding means keeping Christ at the centre of our decisions, relationships, ambitions and daily lives.
It means saying:
โLord, I need You today.โ
Not only when we are in trouble.
Not only when we need a miracle.
Not only when we have a problem.
But every day.
The secret of a fruitful Christian life is not occasional contact with Christ but continual connection with Christ.
3. OUR CONNECTION WITH CHRIST PRODUCES FRUIT
Jesus says:
โThe same bringeth forth much fruit.โ
A healthy branch will eventually reveal its connection to the vine through fruit.
In the same way, a genuine relationship with Christ should produce visible changes in our lives.
Our character should become more Christ-like.
Our speech should become more gracious.
Our attitudes should become more loving.
Our patience should increase.
Our forgiveness should deepen.
Our obedience should become stronger.
Our compassion should grow.
Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
These are not merely qualities we pretend to possess. They are the result of Christ's life working within us.
Fruitfulness is therefore more than what we do for God. It is also what God produces in us.
It is possible to be busy in ministry and still be spiritually unfruitful.
It is possible to preach to others while neglecting our own spiritual condition.
It is possible to look successful outwardly while becoming dry inwardly.
God is not only interested in our activity. He is interested in our fruit.
The question is not simply, โWhat am I doing for God?โ
We must also ask:
โWhat is Christ producing in me?โ
4. WE CANNOT BEAR FRUIT IN OUR OWN STRENGTH
Jesus makes a powerful statement:
โFor without me ye can do nothing.โ
This is a declaration of complete dependence.
Human strength has limits.
Human wisdom has limits.
Human resources have limits.
Human understanding has limits.
But Christ is sufficient.
We often try to carry things God never asked us to carry alone. We depend on our experience, intelligence, connections and resources, then wonder why we are exhausted.
Jesus reminds us that spiritual fruitfulness does not come from self-sufficiency.
The branch does not struggle to produce fruit independently of the vine. It remains connected and receives life from the vine.
This changes the way we approach prayer.
Instead of saying, โI can handle everything,โ we say:
โLord, I need Your help.โ
Instead of saying, โI know what to do,โ we say:
โLord, give me wisdom.โ
Instead of saying, โI am strong enough,โ we say:
โLord, strengthen me.โ
Dependence upon Christ is not weakness.
It is the pathway to true spiritual strength.
5. GOD PRUNES US TO MAKE US MORE FRUITFUL
John 15 does not only speak about remaining in Christ. It also speaks about the Father's work of pruning the branches.
Pruning can be painful.
There are seasons when God removes things we have become comfortable with.
He may expose wrong attitudes.
He may correct our priorities.
He may challenge our motives.
He may remove habits that are damaging our spiritual lives.
He may close doors we desperately wanted opened.
He may ask us to surrender things we have held tightly.
At first, pruning can look like loss.
But the gardener does not prune a branch because he wants to destroy it. He prunes it because he wants more fruit.
Sometimes God must remove something good to prepare us for something better.
Sometimes He cuts away what is unnecessary so that our spiritual energy can be directed towards what truly matters.
Therefore, when God corrects you, do not immediately conclude that He has rejected you.
Some seasons of cutting are actually seasons of preparation.
The pain of pruning can become the pathway to greater fruitfulness.
Ask yourself:
โLord, what are You trying to remove from my life so that I can become more fruitful?โ
6. STAY CONNECTED TO THE VINE
Everything in Jesus' teaching comes back to this central principle:
Remain connected to Me.
The branch does not need to become the vine.
It simply needs to remain connected to the vine.
We do not need to manufacture spiritual life. We need to remain close to the One who gives life.
Stay in prayer.
Stay in God's Word.
Stay in obedience.
Stay in fellowship with Christ.
Stay humble.
Stay dependent.
Stay close.
The world will constantly encourage us to become independent and self-sufficient. But Jesus gives us a different principle:
โWithout me ye can do nothing.โ
Your strength is not enough.
Your experience is not enough.
Your knowledge is not enough.
Your resources are not enough.
You need the Vine.
And when you remain connected to Christ, His life flows into you.
His grace strengthens you.
His Word transforms you.
His Spirit produces fruit through you.
His presence sustains you.
His power enables you.
CONCLUSION
Jesus did not say:
โI am the vine, and you can manage the rest.โ
He said:
โI am the vine; ye are the branches.โ
A branch has one great responsibility: stay connected to the vine.
The moment the branch becomes disconnected, fruitfulness becomes impossible.
Therefore, do not allow success to make you independent of Christ.
Do not allow busyness to replace fellowship with Christ.
Do not allow ministry to replace intimacy with Christ.
Do not allow problems to drive you away from Christ.
And do not allow your own abilities to make you forget your Source.
Jesus is the Vine. We are the branches.
Our life comes from Him.
Our strength comes from Him.
Our fruitfulness comes from Him.
Our future is secure in Him.
So abide in Him.
Remain in Him.
Depend on Him.
Walk with Him.
And let His life flow through you.
