Introduction
Everyone desires security. We secure our homes, businesses, vehicles, finances and possessions because we understand that life is filled with uncertainties. Yet, despite all the security systems around us, there is no human system that can guarantee complete safety.
Psalm 91:1 introduces us to a security that is greater than anything the world can provide. It is not merely protection for a particular season or a temporary escape from trouble. It is life-time security found in God.
The Psalmist says, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Notice the words dwelleth and abide. This is not about occasionally visiting God's presence when trouble comes. It is about making God's presence our permanent dwelling place.
1. Life-time security begins with dwelling in God
The Bible does not say that the person who occasionally visits the secret place will abide under God's shadow. It says, "He that dwelleth."
To dwell means to remain, stay and make a place your home. God desires more than occasional fellowship with us. He wants us to live in continuous relationship with Him.
Many people run to God when there is danger but return to their old ways when the danger disappears. True security comes when God is not merely our emergency contact but our permanent dwelling place.
When your life is rooted in God, your confidence does not depend entirely on what is happening around you.
2. The secret place represents intimacy with God
The secret place is a place of fellowship, prayer, obedience and communion with God. It is where the noise of the world becomes quiet and the heart becomes attentive to God.
There are battles that cannot be won merely through human intelligence or connections. There are dangers that we cannot see and situations we cannot predict. But God sees what we cannot see.
The person who continually seeks God develops a confidence that does not come from circumstances. He knows that his life is in the hands of the Almighty.
3. God's security is greater than human security
Human security has limitations.
Money can disappear.
People can disappoint us.
Governments can change.
Buildings can collapse.
Plans can fail.
Human strength can become weak.
But the Almighty does not become weak.
Psalm 91 does not teach us that believers will never face difficulties. Rather, it reveals that God remains our refuge and security even when difficulties arise.
Our confidence is not that nothing bad can ever happen. Our confidence is that nothing can separate us from God's presence and ultimate purpose when we remain in Him.
4. God's shadow speaks of His covering
A shadow provides covering from the intensity of the sun. In the same way, the Psalmist presents God as the One whose presence provides covering for His people.
To be under God's shadow means to remain close to Him.
You cannot enjoy the shadow of something while deliberately moving far away from it. The closer you remain, the more you experience its covering.
This is why our relationship with God must not be seasonal. We should not seek Him only when there is trouble.
Stay under the shadow. Stay in prayer. Stay in His Word. Stay in obedience. Stay in His presence.
5. Life-time security requires obedience
Psalm 91 is not a licence to live carelessly and expect God to protect us from the consequences of deliberate disobedience.
The secret place is a place of relationship with God, and genuine relationship produces obedience.
Jesus said in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."
We cannot claim to desire God's covering while deliberately rejecting God's instructions.
Security in God is not an excuse for recklessness. It is an invitation to walk closely with Him.
6. God's presence gives security in uncertain times
We live in a world where tomorrow is not guaranteed. People make plans, but circumstances can change unexpectedly.
Yet the child of God can face tomorrow with confidence because his security is not based solely on what tomorrow contains. His security is based on Who holds tomorrow.
When you dwell in the secret place, you can say:
"I may not know what tomorrow will bring, but I know the God who will be with me tomorrow."
That is genuine security.
7. Make God your permanent residence
The greatest lesson of Psalm 91:1 is that security is found in dwelling, not visiting.
Some people know how to visit God's presence but have not learned how to dwell there. They pray when they need something, worship when everything is going well, and seek God when danger appears.
But God is calling us into something deeper.
Dwell.
Make prayer your lifestyle.
Make God's Word your foundation.
Make obedience your response.
Make God's presence your home.
When God becomes your dwelling place, you do not have to spend your life living in fear.
Conclusion
Life-time security is not found in wealth, connections, possessions, positions or human strength. All these things have their place, but none can provide the security that comes from God.
Psalm 91:1 gives us the foundation:
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
The promise is connected to a position: dwelling in God.
Therefore, do not merely run to God when trouble comes. Live in Him.
Do not make God your temporary shelter. Make Him your permanent dwelling place.
The world may change, but God does not change. Circumstances may shift, but His faithfulness remains. Trouble may come, but the person who dwells in the secret place has a refuge that cannot be destroyed.
Your greatest security is not knowing that life will always be easy. Your greatest security is knowing that you will never face life without God.
