Introduction
Every day, whether we realise it or not, the world is trying to shape us. Through television, films, social media, music, fashion, education, politics and even our relationships, we are constantly being told how to think, what to believe and how to live. The world presents its own standards of success, happiness and morality, often in direct opposition to God's Word.
Sadly, many Christians have gradually allowed these worldly standards to replace biblical principles. Instead of influencing the world, they have become influenced by it. Their language no longer reflects Christ. Their priorities mirror those of unbelievers. Their decisions are driven more by public opinion than by the Holy Spirit.
The Apostle Paul understood this danger. Writing to believers in Rome, a city filled with immorality, idolatry and worldly pleasures, he gave a timeless instruction:
"Do not be conformed to this world."
Notice that Paul did not make it a suggestion. It is a command. Every believer must make a deliberate decision not to allow the world to dictate how they live.
The Christian life is not about fitting into society. It is about standing out as the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
1. The World Has a Pattern
Paul says,
"Do not be conformed to this world."
The word conformed means to be moulded into a pattern.
Imagine pouring liquid into a mould. Whatever shape the mould has becomes the shape of the liquid when it hardens.
That is exactly what the world tries to do to people.
It has a pattern.
It says:
Everyone lies, so lying is acceptable.
Everyone cheats, so cheating is normal.
Everyone is living in immorality, so why shouldn't you?
Success matters more than integrity.
Money is more important than character.
The world constantly pressures believers to abandon God's standards.
But the child of God is not called to fit into the world's mould.
The believer belongs to another Kingdom.

John 17:14-16
1 John 2:15-17
Jesus Himself said that His followers are in the world but not of the world.
2. Transformation Begins in the Mind
Paul continues,
"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
The Christian life begins with a changed heart, but it continues through a renewed mind.
Many people want God to change their circumstances without allowing Him to change their thinking.
Yet every lasting transformation begins inside.
Before actions change, thoughts must change.
Before behaviour changes, beliefs must change.
Before character changes, the mind must change.
That is why the devil constantly attacks the mind.
If he can control your thoughts, he can influence your decisions.
If he influences your decisions, he can determine the direction of your life.
God renews our minds through His Word.
Every time we read Scripture, meditate on it and obey it, our thinking gradually becomes like Christ's.

3. Why Christians Must Not Become Like the World
A. Because We Belong to Christ
The day you gave your life to Jesus, your identity changed.
You are no longer merely a citizen of this world.
You became a citizen of God's Kingdom.
Your lifestyle should therefore reflect your heavenly citizenship.
2 Corinthians 5:17 declares that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
Old habits, old values and old priorities should gradually disappear.
B. Because the World Is Temporary
Everything this world celebrates today will one day disappear.
Fashion changes.
Popularity fades.
Riches perish.
Human applause is short-lived.
Only God's Kingdom is eternal.
Wise believers invest more in eternity than in temporary pleasures.
Jesus said,
"Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven."
C. Because Worldliness Destroys Spiritual Sensitivity
No believer suddenly backslides overnight.
Compromise usually begins with little decisions.
Ignoring prayer.
Neglecting Bible study.
Accepting small sins.
Seeking worldly approval.
Before long, the heart becomes cold towards God.
Many believers who once burned with passion for Christ now struggle to pray because they gradually embraced the world's values.
4. Biblical Examples
Daniel
Daniel lived in Babylon, one of the most corrupt nations of his time.
The government tried to change:
his education,
his language,
his food,
his culture,
even his name.
Yet Daniel refused to compromise.
He changed his location but never changed his convictions.
God honoured him above kings.
Joseph
Joseph lived in Egypt where immorality was common.
When Potiphar's wife tempted him, he did not ask,
"Will anyone see me?"
Instead, he asked,
"How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"
His fear of God was greater than his desire for temporary pleasure.
Demas
Demas once worked with Paul.
Yet Paul later wrote,
"Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world."
His love for the world became greater than his love for Christ.
It is a solemn reminder that anyone who stops guarding their heart can drift away.
5. How Can We Resist Worldliness?
The battle against worldliness is won through daily choices.
Spend time with God every day through prayer.
Read and meditate on the Scriptures consistently.
Surround yourself with believers who strengthen your faith.
Be selective about what you watch, hear and entertain.
Walk daily under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Remember that every decision should bring glory to Christ.
Holiness is not achieved by accident. It is cultivated through daily obedience.
Conclusion
God never called the Church to imitate the world. He called the Church to transform it.
The greatest influence Christians can have is not by becoming like everyone else, but by reflecting Jesus wherever they go.
When the world chooses hatred, choose love.
When the world celebrates compromise, choose holiness.
When the world glorifies pride, choose humility.
When the world promotes darkness, shine as the light of Christ.
Remember, a ship is safe while it is on the sea. It is only when the sea gets into the ship that it begins to sink. Likewise, Christians are called to live in the world, but they must never allow the world's values to enter their hearts.
Choose every day to renew your mind through God's Word. Let your life be shaped by Christ rather than by culture, and you will discover God's good, acceptable and perfect will.
