Introduction
One of the greatest privileges a person can ever receive is not wealth, fame, education, or influence. It is the privilege of becoming a child of God. Every human being is God's creation, but not everyone is God's child in the biblical sense. According to Scripture, sonship is a gift that comes through receiving Jesus Christ by faith.
Many people believe that simply attending church, being morally upright, or being born into a Christian family makes them God's children. However, Jesus teaches that becoming God's child is a spiritual transformation that occurs when a person receives Him as Lord and Saviour.
Today, we will examine what it means to become God's children and the blessings that come with this divine relationship.
1. Becoming God's Child Begins by Receiving Christ
John 1:12
The verse begins with the words, "As many as received Him..."
Receiving Christ means:
Accepting Him as the Son of God.
Believing His sacrifice for our sins.
Repenting from sin.
Surrendering our lives to His Lordship.
Salvation is not inherited. Every individual must personally receive Jesus.
Supporting Scriptures:
Romans 10:9-10
Acts 16:31
Faith is not merely acknowledging Christ's existence but entrusting our lives completely to Him.
2. Becoming God's Child Is an Act of Grace
We do not earn God's family through good works.
Ephesians 2:8-9
"For by grace are ye saved through faith..."
No amount of charity, fasting, prayer, or religious activities can purchase salvation.
God adopts us into His family solely because of His love and mercy.
This should produce humility and gratitude in every believer.
3. Becoming God's Child Involves a New Birth
Jesus explained this truth to Nicodemus.
Gospel of John 3:3
"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
The new birth changes:
Our heart
Our desires
Our nature
Our eternal destination
The Holy Spirit transforms us from within.
Religion changes behaviour.
The new birth changes the heart.
4. God's Children Live Differently
Once we become God's children, our lifestyle should reflect our heavenly Father.
1 John 3:1
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us..."
God's children are called to:
Love one another.
Forgive others.
Live holy lives.
Walk in obedience.
Display the fruit of the Spirit.
People should recognise God's children by their character rather than merely by their words.
5. God's Children Enjoy Special Privileges
A. We become heirs of God
Romans 8:17
We inherit eternal life and every spiritual blessing in Christ.
B. We have direct access to God
We can boldly approach Him in prayer.
Hebrews 4:16
C. We receive divine guidance
God leads His children through His Spirit.
Romans 8:14
D. We enjoy God's fatherly care
Jesus taught that our Heavenly Father knows every need before we ask.
Gospel of Matthew 6:31-33
6. God's Children Accept His Discipline
A loving father corrects his children.
Likewise, God disciplines those He loves.
Hebrews 12:6
God's correction is never to destroy us but to shape us into Christ's likeness.
7. God's Children Have Eternal Hope
This world is not our permanent home.
Jesus has prepared an eternal home for His children.
Gospel of John 14:1-3
No matter the suffering, trials, or persecution we face, our inheritance is secure in Christ.
Lessons from the Sermon
Salvation comes through receiving Jesus Christ.
Becoming God's child is by grace through faith.
Every believer must experience the new birth.
God's children should reflect His character.
Sonship brings privileges as well as responsibilities.
God lovingly disciplines His children.
Our eternal inheritance is secure in Christ.
Practical Applications
Examine whether you have genuinely received Christ or merely practise religion.
Spend time daily in God's Word to grow as His child.
Demonstrate God's love through forgiveness, kindness, and compassion.
Trust your Heavenly Father during difficult seasons.
Live in a manner worthy of your identity as God's child.
Conclusion
God's greatest invitation is not merely to join a religion but to become part of His family. Through Jesus Christ, sinners are forgiven, transformed, adopted, and given the right to be called the children of God.
Being God's child is both a privilege and a calling. We are called to live differently, love deeply, obey faithfully, and confidently look forward to our eternal inheritance.
Today, if you have not yet received Christ, the invitation remains open. Believe in Him, surrender your life to Him, and experience the joy, peace, and assurance of belonging to the family of God.
