Take your time, reflect on the Word, and allow its truth to strengthen your walk with God.
Introduction
Promises are powerful. Every day people make promises to family, friends, employers and governments. Sadly, many promises are broken because human beings are limited by circumstances, weakness or dishonesty.
God is entirely different. He has unlimited power, perfect knowledge and absolute integrity. Whatever He promises, He performs. His timetable may differ from ours, but His faithfulness never changes.
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals a God who remembers every covenant, fulfils every prophecy and keeps every promise. The coming of Jesus Christ is the greatest evidence that God's Word cannot fail.
Luke 2 introduces us to two elderly believers who had spent many years waiting for God's promise. They never abandoned their faith, and eventually they witnessed what generations before them longed to see. Their lives teach us how to wait on God and trust His perfect timing.
Sermon Body
1. God's Promises May Require Patient Waiting
Luke 2:25
"Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel..."
Simeon had waited for years.
No one knows exactly how old he was, but he had lived long enough to see many disappointments in Israel. Roman oppression continued. Religious corruption existed. Yet he never gave up believing God's promise.
Waiting is often God's classroom.
Abraham waited for Isaac.
Joseph waited in prison.
David waited before becoming king.
Israel waited for four hundred years before hearing another prophetic voice.
God's delays are never His denials.
Application
Many believers become discouraged because answers do not come quickly. Some are waiting for healing, marriage, children, employment or restoration.
Do not mistake silence for absence.
God is still working.
2. God's Timing Is Always Perfect
Luke 2:26-27
The Holy Spirit had revealed that Simeon would not die before seeing the Messiah.
Notice that on the exact day Mary and Joseph brought Jesus into the Temple, the Spirit directed Simeon there.
Nothing happened by accident.
God coordinated:
Caesar's decree
Joseph's journey
Bethlehem's birth
The shepherds
The wise men
The Temple visit
Everything occurred according to God's divine timetable.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 says,
"He has made everything beautiful in its time."
God is never early.
God is never late.
He is always on time.
Illustration
Lazarus died before Jesus arrived.
To everyone else, Jesus was late.
To God, it was the perfect moment to reveal His glory.
Application
When your life appears delayed, remember that God sees the complete picture while we only see today's circumstances.
3. God's Promises Are Fulfilled Through Jesus Christ
When Simeon held the infant Jesus, he declared,
"My eyes have seen your salvation." (Luke 2:30)
Jesus was not merely another prophet.
He was God's greatest promise fulfilled.
Everything pointed towards Him.
The Passover Lamb
The sacrifices
The priesthood
The Temple
The prophets
All found fulfilment in Christ.
Paul later wrote,
"For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ." (2 Corinthians 1:20)
Christ fulfils:
the promise of forgiveness
the promise of eternal life
the promise of reconciliation
the promise of peace with God
the promise of salvation
Christ-Centred Truth
Without Jesus, God's promises remain incomplete.
In Christ, believers inherit every spiritual blessing.
4. Faithfulness Positions Us to Witness God's Fulfilment
Anna had served God faithfully for decades.
Luke tells us she worshipped continually with fasting and prayer.
She did not become bitter because she was widowed.
She did not abandon worship because life had become difficult.
Instead, she remained devoted.
When Jesus arrived, she recognised Him immediately.
Faithfulness prepares us to recognise God's work.
Many people saw the same baby.
Only a few recognised the Messiah.
Faithfulness sharpens spiritual vision.
Application
Continue serving God even while waiting.
Keep praying.
Keep worshipping.
Keep obeying.
Your season of fulfilment will come.
5. God's Fulfilled Promises Become Our Testimony
After seeing Jesus, Simeon praised God.
Anna spoke about Jesus to everyone waiting for redemption.
A fulfilled promise should never remain private.
God blesses His people so that His glory may be proclaimed.
David testified.
Paul testified.
The Samaritan woman testified.
The healed blind man testified.
The church grows when believers tell others what God has done.
Application
When God fulfils His promise in your life:
Give Him the glory.
Encourage others.
Strengthen weak believers.
Lead unbelievers to Christ.
Your testimony may become someone else's encouragement to keep trusting God.
Practical Application
Personal Spiritual Growth
Study God's promises regularly and build your faith upon His Word rather than your emotions.
Family Life
Teach your children that God is trustworthy by sharing answered prayers and biblical examples of His faithfulness.
Christian Character
Develop patience, perseverance and faith while waiting for God's timing.
Church Life
Encourage fellow believers who are waiting on God rather than allowing discouragement to spread.
Evangelism
Present Jesus as God's fulfilled promise of salvation for all humanity.
Relationship with God
Walk daily with confidence, knowing that the God who fulfilled His promise in Christ will fulfil every promise concerning His children.
Conclusion
The story of Simeon and Anna reminds us that God never forgets.
Generations waited for the Messiah.
Some died believing.
Others doubted.
But at the appointed time, God's promise became reality.
Today we also live between promises fulfilled and promises yet to come.
Christ has already come.
Christ has already died.
Christ has already risen.
Christ will come again.
If God has fulfilled every prophecy concerning Christ's first coming, we can confidently trust Him regarding every promise that remains.
Therefore, do not lose heart.
Keep believing.
Keep praying.
Keep serving.
Keep waiting.
The God who fulfilled His greatest promise in Jesus Christ will also fulfil His promises in your life according to His perfect will and timing.
May God's Word continue to guide and transform your life.
